Can We Make this "Ninja" Weapon Work? - Kusarigama Test
Talking about a design in theory is all fine and good, but I was itching to mess around with a safe sparring version (or rather approximation) of this interesting Japanese weapon. If you want to see a proper demonstration, look elsewhere. :) This is just a clumsy exploration from an outsider perspective, based on curiosity rather than specialized skill.

The Best Historical Weapon for Defending Stairs?

Is Dual Wielding Swords REALLY That Awkward?
Просмотров 77 тыс.День назад
A lot has been said about why dual swords (of similar length) were not terribly common in history overall. But is it really an unrealistic fantasy trope or is there some merit to grabbing a second sword instead of a shield / buckler / parrying dagger? At this point I feel like there has been some over-correcting, and claims have been made that go too far in the opposite direction, portraying an...
This Sword is Beastly! (Two-Handed Katzbalger?)
Просмотров 73 тыс.14 дней назад
Have you ever wondered what a two-handed Katzbalger would be like? There are some depictions of Landsknecht mercenaries with a Zweihander that is basically that, with "pretzel" quillons and a similar pommel shape. Lancelot Chan created a design just like that, in the form of the "Red Baron" German battle sword. He sent me one along with cutting material, so this is my first impression and test....

How Good is a Hidden Katana (Shikomizue)?
Просмотров 123 тыс.Месяц назад
During Japan's Meiji period the wearing of swords was banned, so of course people did it in secret, carrying blades hidden inside inconspicuous walking sticks or canes. The concealment comes at a price, making it a worse design in an open duel compared to a traditional katana. But does it make up for its drawbacks through its unexpected effectiveness for self-defense in a surprise attack on the...
Does this "Dirty Trick" Actually Work in a Sword Fight?
Просмотров 62 тыс.Месяц назад
Is it even really a dirty trick, or was it just part of a "whatever it takes" mentality back in history? If you had to defend your life on medieval streets or a battlefield, would it really matter whether throwing your secondary short sword or dagger in the opponent's face is "dishonorable", as long as you win? The character arc of Skallagrim is always fun to look back on. Its real growth to see him see someone do successfully everything he would often say was either impossible to do with any benefit or just should not be done, and acknowledge that it works.

I’ve always loved the concept of the kusarigama but it does seem to be outclassed by a lot of more conventional weaponry. iirc it was meant to be useful in toppling cavalry troops but in a fight on even ground a halberd would easily dominate. Even if you were to tangle the head with the chain it’s more likely that your opponent could simply throw the halberd at you while closing the distance with a sidearm. Very neat weapon though, probably a lot of fun to use

Bruh, if i get hooked by a hook sword in my torso, I'm dropping like a fly. It's ovr at that point. Imagine the damage. That could be internal bleeding and possibly multiple ribs fractured or broken. If he hit a little lower and had a clean follow through, I'm now gutted, and you think my first response is to keep fighting. Nah, I'm looking for the nearest medic if i could even still stand and get away

Great video as always. Thought. If this is a ninja weapon was it developed to be used at night. In skilled hands would it be even more effective using at night or in low light conditions? The weapons in the picture at the end of the video look either blackened. Contextually, spys/assassins would like be less skilled swordsmen than person bodyguards, and the weight and chain would mainly be for distracting/creating an opening and the "scythe" would be to make the killing blow. Any chance you can test my theory at night...in low light...dressed like a ninja?

I enjoy the perspectives, but what really seemed to be great was seki seemed to have fun with the longsword, which is great. I would also like to state, that the handguard problems that he ran into is with what could be considered a very standard hilt guard, but i feel its important to mention that custom handguards are a thing and that they could have shorter or longer guards. Or which would be crazy, but no guard or little to none.

Helm cleaving happens quite frequently in Norse sagas and I often wondered about it - but I think it's just a way of emphasising how special the hero is, by showing them with essentially superhuman powers. And we should totally understand that. The flipside of this is how characters in films often survive all sorts of terrible blows and falls which would immediately kill a real person.

  • @7dayspking
    @7dayspking 3 часа назад

My old complaints about the helmet tests was the components weren't carefully made, researched, thoughtfully reproduced reproductions, like those used in Todd's workshop's recent tests were. But more modern cheap helmets not designed for combat or for combat with live historical weapons as historical helmets were. What's cheap to make now isn't what was cheap to make. I disagree with you on conserving energy or pacing yourself in fighting, excluding point fighting. if a combatant doesn't keep themselves dangerous, or keep spending energy to keep themselves safe, they'll be swallowed up by more game, dangerous and aggressive combatants. Boxers need to be ready to be hit hard at any moment, and, if they're not feather fisted, prepared to throw hard at any moment, because a boxer who's known not to hit with painful and dangerous punches is no deterrent. Boxers who aren't feather fisted take opportunities to finish fights early. There's prolonged holding and wrestling to keep someone safe from that, and wrestling to survive uses lots of energy anyway.

They will just invent a way to reload the gun using magic. Still it has other limitations, limited ammo, limited capacity of the gun to shoot, it's going to jam after a while. When you can find a way to balance magic together with melee weapons, you can do that with guns as well.

I appreciate your content. I love that you try things outside of your discipline that are related to it. I also love how respectfully you approach it and aren't willing to dismiss it entirely when you don't get favorable results. It's refreshing to see your sort of individual in the present day, and I wish the best for your channel. As far as this weapon and Japanese weapons in general go, I feel like they behave the same way as biological evolution does on small islands. Evolution on small islands can occur faster than on the mainland due to the unique selective pressures of islands' isolation, limited space, and sharp boundaries. This can lead to extreme and particular evolutionary adaptations. In the same vein, because Japan has only ever had to fight itself for the majority of its history, it has had to adapt unique weapons and fighting styles to counter itself. It stands to reason that these hyperspecific martial evolutions would have mixed results against those of other countries that have had to deal with other countries' weapons and martial arts.

I'd say if you have strong enough arms you might be able to use Dual Weilding with very little problematic postions. But, it would only work if you have a Fast Reaction speed to move the second sword to block/Parry/Gaurd than retaliate with the other Sword Block with first one - Strike with second on the second - in coming attack react to that with a block - try Strike but if your opponent blocks that Attack quickly react with the other blade

Im at 5:09 and a not about blocking with chains, you are supposed to be able to block straight and then twist alightly on the bounce back to help displace their blade and get in a little bit easier to counterattack. Your comment about it being possible but way harder to block with than a normal rigid weapon is so true lol. Loose or "soft" weapons like this are usually a back up weapon because can stuff a chain into a bag or wrap jt around yourself in a way you cant with a spear or sword. Blocking with the chain is for when you've run out of better things to block with. Skill issues are obviously there but even setting those aside a two handed sword is a large primary weapon, it should do better than a semi concealable secondary weapon. Seki-sensai has talked about an era where for certain samurai the kama as well as chain weapons were used as secondary weapons instead of wakazishi, but not as a replacement for the katana. So a more "fair" lineup would be sickle and chain against like, dagger and walking stick. Personally I would still go with dagger and stick most of the time tho. The thing you noticed with the trees is real too, soft weapons like this just require soo much more brain power and focus its really mentally fatiguing. Anyway, soft weapons are so fun, and practicality set aside its such a fun way to practice your dexterity and skills because it's such a hard mode way to approach weapon handling, and I love to see more people playing with them. And when we look at them historically, i think its wild to think that back in the day some trained professionals whose whole lives were dedicated to fighting liked to have and use some flexible weapons in their arsenal. Crazy motherfuckers and whether in retrospect one agrees with their choice or not much respect.
